Stevie J. Cole - Darkest Before Dawn review

“Dark, gritty and utterly captivating. I couldn’t put this book down!” - USA Today Bestselling Author, Natasha Knight

Sixty-four days in captivity. Sixty-four days to lose yourself—or find yourself. I’m Ava Donovan. I was abducted at the age of nineteen. I’m told I’m a survivor, but the truth is, I only survived because he saved me. Even when he kept me locked in that room—he saved me. Constantly wondering when and how you will die, that does something to you. To your mind. But what do you do when it does something to your heart? What do you do when the man holding you captive seems just as broken as you are, when his mere presence becomes a comfort you crave—when you love him even though you shouldn’t? You smile and tell yourself it’s okay because love has no morals. Sixty-four days in captivity gave me a love most people will never have and my freedom took it all away.

My Review:

Wow! This book was darker than I normally read, but I'm glad I took a chance on it.  It immediately sucked me in and I couldn't look away. The beginning of the story is brutal and oh-so-sad.  But we, the reader, see why Max is the way he is. That moment in time shaped him and his sister to the way they are now. From appearances, Ava has lived the life of luxury.  But she's had to endure a traumatic event in her life and she now finds herself living a new kind of terror.

Stevie J. Cole does such an amazing job of bringing the readers into the depths of Ava and Max's world.  Even though it feels so wrong, it also feels very right.  And you have to keep exploring to see where things go.  And by that I mean, YOU CAN'T STOP READING!  Holy cow! For real, this book captured me and wouldn't let me go.  I didn't want to love Max and feel for him and Ava, but I couldn't help myself.  There are so many twists and facets to this story that the reader won't want to miss a minute of it.  But it all makes sense, the more the reader learns about these characters and how their lives intertwine.  It's quite the roller coaster of emotions and the journey isn't like other books you've read.  That being said, know this is a dark story but it's worth the read.  I will be thinking of this story days later... it's not going to let me go for awhile!
