Meghan Quinn - The Perfect Duet review

The Left Side Of Perfect – Release Day – August 30

For better or for worse,'til death do us part . . .

The better captured me; she's who stole my heart.

And made me realize I couldn’t live without this woman.

The worse of her took my breath away--kicked me when I was down and twisted me into a million knots.

When I first met her, I thought she was someone I would never see again.

The second time I ran into her, it was a random coincidence.

The third?

I didn’t know it at the time, but she was the girl I was going to marry.

But life isn’t always perfect. You have to take the better and the worse--even if it means giving her up, having her slip between your fingers, and letting her walk away.

I’m getting married.

This is forever, 'til death do us part.

The Right Side Of Forever – Release Day August 31

In sickness and in health, to love and to cherish . . .

It sounds so simple, to love someone unconditionally.

To give them your heart.

So why is she slowly eating away at my soul with every unanswered phone call, every unread text, and every door left unopened?

She said yes, and yet, in order for her to be with me . . . I need to let her go.

My Review

These books held me captivated and I literally couldn't do anything else once I cracked them open. I'm thankful I had both books so that I didn't have to wait. I completely devoured them, back-to-back.  And luckily for you, reader, both books are out today so you can get them both! So we met the key players to this story in The Upside of Falling and The Downside of Love. While you don't have to read those books first, I do HIGHLY recommend it.

The Left Side of Perfect

OHHHHH MAN!  This book was so amazing. Okay, I really don't want to give anything away here and so I hesitate in telling you who the characters are. How about I go with initials, so if you haven't read the two previous books, I won't ruin anything. I ADORED C's and R's budding friendship.  Sure they jumped the gun and bit and did things a little backwards, but their friendship was realistic and genuine.  Taking sex and relationships out of the equation for them, helped them develop a GREAT friendship.  R had a hard time shaking off the damage her mom's actions have caused. C wanted to be a true friend to her. I ADORED the little things he did for her and the deep bond they had. But timing is a funny thing ...

The Right Side of Forever

The last book shocked me so I was ready to dive into this one! My heart broke for R. She knew there wasn't anything to be said about what was happening with her best friend.  She finds she has to pull away in order to save her heart.   But C doesn't let her.  He wants her in his life but doesn't see how hard it is for her. I was HOOKED on this story and ALL THE FEELS! I was consumed by this book and it didn't let me go, even after The End.  Please do yourself a favor and immerse yourself in these amazing books!

Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to bust out and dance if “It’s Raining Men” starts beating through the air and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because they may be humped. Once she started commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life, deep male voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing… enter her first novel, Caught Looking. Now you can find the spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring home to his wife. Oh and she loves a good boob squeeze!

EWTallDarkIrresistibleCover5x8_MEDIUM

When it comes to love and happily ever after, Leo Stone is a disbeliever. Having been left at the altar by the one woman he thought he'd spend the rest of his life with, he's vowed to keep his heart to himself and enjoy the one thing he knows won't affect his emotions . . . hot, dirty sex. Except, what's a guy to do when a gorgeous woman asks him to be her stand-in boyfriend for two weeks—with benefits? Sign him up, please!
A drunken night one year ago, Peyton Bishop used Leo Stone's name and photograph to convince her overprotective parents that she was safe living in New York City—in part thanks to a boyfriend she adored. Except Leo, the hot guy she's had a secret crush on since college, has no idea he's been cast in the role of her lover. With her cousin's wedding coming up, and her parent's expecting to meet this mysterious boyfriend, Peyton is forced to come clean and ask Leo a huge favor.
Leo agrees to be her stand-in boyfriend, but what's a pretend couple to do when their fake feelings start to become oh-so-real?

My Review

I love a good relationship of convenience story! Peyton is an only child with overprotective parents.  So, in order to get them off her back, she makes up the boyfriend story.  However, life send her a curve ball and she has to tell her "secret" crush about the lie. They were friends in the past, so it's not like they were strangers.  Leo is surprised by the news, but he's willing to help an old friend out.  And whew boy! The chemistry between them is still there and palpable through the pages! I enjoyed the  banter between Peyton and Leo.  While they both liked each other, they were learning about who they were now as adults. This was a fast-paced, enjoyable read and I didn't want it to be over! Be sure to grab your copy today!

Excerpt:
The two of them reached Leo's vehicle, and the doors unlocked with a chirp as he pressed the key fob in his free hand. But instead of opening the passenger side for Peyton, he instead turned her around to face him . . . trapping her between the unyielding metal surface of the car behind her and the tall, muscular man standing less than two feet away. He casually placed a hand on the door beside her and leaned a few inches closer. "Before we go, I have one more question for you," he said, his tone serious. She inhaled the warm, masculine scent of his cologne mingling with leather from his jacket and tried not to let that intoxicating fragrance distract her. "Okay." She figured it couldn't get any worse than everything she'd already admitted. "So, usually, when a person gets propositioned, they get something out of the deal," he said, his heavy-lidded gaze dropping to her mouth. "You'd be getting a devoted boyfriend out of the arrangement. What would I get?" She didn't miss the suggestion in his eyes or the playful curve of his smile. "What do you want?" she asked, unable to hide the breathless quality of her voice. "Well, for starters, how about a show of good faith, like a kiss?" His free hand came up and gently cupped the side of her face, while his thumb skimmed along her damp bottom lip. "I think it's important to know what I might be getting myself into and if we're compatible enough to pull off this whole pretend boyfriend/girlfriend thing. I mean, what if we kiss and we realize that there's just no spark there? Then this whole farce is doomed for failure." He was teasing her. She could see the mischievous glimmer in his eyes, and it provoked a smile from her, even as her breathing escalated with every second that passed with the temptation of finally having Leo's lips pressed against hers dangling like a carrot in front of her. "Then kiss me so we can find out," she whispered. His thumb dipped down beneath her chin to tip her head back as he lowered his mouth to hers. His lips were surprisingly soft as they found hers for the first time, his teeth gentle as they nibbled at her bottom lip. She couldn't hold back the needy moan that escaped her throat, or the way her hands instinctively lifted and settled against his solid chest even as he pressed closer to her, his hard thighs and hips pinning her against the car. "Jesus," he breathed against her lips in shock, clearly feeling the heat between them that was a spark on the verge of becoming an undeniable blaze. Sliding both of his hands into her hair, he held her head steady as he came back for another taste, and this time, there wasn't an ounce of gentleness in the way he swept his tongue inside and plundered her mouth—boldly, deeply, greedily. She made a wild, desperate sound as she fisted her hands in his cotton T-shirt and matched him kiss for kiss, turning that blaze into an inferno that was so hot it threatened to singe them both. And in the moment, neither one of them seemed to care. She felt the unmistakable ridge of his erection nudging against her belly, and a new hunger spiraled tighter inside her. Desire made her knees weak, her nipples excruciatingly hard, and her panties wet. Everything about Leo Stone was sensation overload to every part of her body, and if there was any worry in either of their minds about pulling off a believable attraction, this kiss eliminated any and all concerns. By the time Leo finally lifted his mouth from hers, they were both breathing hard from all the heightened sexual tension between them. His dark eyes glittered with lust as he gazed down at her, looking as dazed as she felt. Somehow, someway, she found her voice. "Was that convincing enough for you?" she asked huskily. His low, sexy chuckle made her shiver. "Oh, yeah . . . it was definitely a good start."

I look up at Cam and meet his eyes, brimming with secrets. I need answers, and I need them now.
  No more secrets, Cam.
 “What’s going on?”
The man in my arms doesn’t answer with his words. Instead, he takes hold of the edge of my towel and pulls it from my body. I gasp at the sensation of our skin pressing intimately together. I brace myself against his chiseled arms, digging my fingers into his biceps for purchase.
He isn’t done. He lifts his hands, one to my hip, one to my cheek. His thumb draws a small circle on my exposed hip bone. With the side of his knuckle, he traces the outline of my lower lip. I stay very, very still so he won’t notice the slight shudder racing down my spine.
“I can’t tell you,” he says so softly that it breaks my heart.
“Yes, you can.” I barely recognize my own voice. Cam’s eyes, dark and hurting, are locked on my lips. I want to ease that pain.
And I think I know how.
I lean in closer, pulling myself up to his level with my hands on his chest. Our breaths mingle and everything is warm, the air between us aflame.
“You’re killing me.” These are the words that fall from Cam’s lips before they meet mine.
  God.
My lips are locked against his in the softest of kisses. I catch his lower lip with my own, pressing every ounce of my feelings into him. Every thank you for being there for me. Every you’re perfect for being exactly what I need.
Can he feel how much I care for him?
He’s still for a whole Mississippi second—a second too long for me to bear.
Oh God. What have I done?
But the moment I pull away, Cam leans in. His hands are on my face, holding my lips against his. He tilts my head, digs his fingers into my hair, and opens his mouth to mine.
 “Natalie . . .”
The sound of my name slipping so lustfully from the back of his throat sends a jolt all the way down. All the way down.
I pull myself even higher on my toes, clinging to him with my arms around his neck. He returns the favor, wrapping his arms around my waist and pulling me tight against him. Our mouths are magnetic, unable to separate, unwilling to stop.
  My God. I’m kissing Cam.
  I’m kissing my best friend.
  I’m kissing him and I can’t stop.
I dart my tongue between his lips, caressing the underside of his upper lip. He growls, maddened by my bold move. His fingers blaze fiery trails down my neck and shoulders. His hands explore me, memorizing the slope of my back and the curve of my hips. Each touch is so soft, yet so electric.   Soon it’s all frantic kisses and eager moans that I’m pretty sure are coming from me. I press into his shoulders, leaving handprints on his chest. My fingers draw lines down his abdomen, then finally trace along the bulge beneath his towel.
Cam jerks back, his eyes full of questions.
But there’s no more time for questions. We’ve wasted far too much of it.

Claire Marti - Sunset in Laguna review

This was such a sweet read! I really enjoyed getting lost in Christian’s and Kelly’s journey. While life had thrown both of them curve balls, Christian’s journey was the most powerful. Christian was a military major who had seen several tours of duty. Life wasn’t what it used to be for him. He had a tough road to fully recover and Kelly was the first woman to get past his defenses.
Kelly had to make big changes in her life and do something completely out of the ordinary for her.  She was a strong character and stood up for what she believed in, even when it cost her everything. She had a trauma in her past she's still struggling with and working to overcome.  It's something she carries around with her and it appears from time-to-time in her everyday life.
I enjoyed the chemistry between them and while it wasn’t easy, the struggle they had to face. I thought Claire Marti did a good job of showing how much the the things that can’t be seen affect our military, as much as the scars and injuries we can see. Their story was sweet, hopeful and an all-around good read!

Returning to Laguna Beach after four tours in the Middle East, Christian Wolfe leaves the military behind and buys a wine bar, vowing to keep his life simple. He fights to keep his devastating PTSD a secret and refuses to burden anyone else with his baggage. When stunning Kelly Prescott and her red stilettos saunter into town, she drives him past the bonds of his self-control.

Successful in her father’s stuffy law firm, Kelly’s too compassionate to survive in the cutthroat world of corporate litigation. Leaving behind both family and courtroom drama, she moves to Laguna to become general counsel for a nonprofit veterans’ organization.

She didn’t bargain on a gorgeous modern-day Heathcliff, and in Christian, she sees another kind of challenge—one she can’t resist.

My Review

I love going back to Nikki's and Damien's lives! This book was fast paced for me and I didn't want it to ever end.  I feel greedy when it comes to the Starks. And in this book, I thought it was super fun to get a glimpse into Nikki's work/life balance.  (Side note: it's always fun seeing your name in a book, even if it has nothing to do with you. LOL) Damien has never stopped her from reaching her goals. He lets her set the pace and she wants to give back to him.  He's always planning for her, so she wants to surprise him. I enjoyed the banter and the love between them. The reader can feel their chemistry and their emotions through the pages. J.Kenner does such an amazing job of bringing Damien and Nikki to life, in my opinion.  I was captivated by them and held my breath, waiting to see what was going to happen next.  I love watching them mature and grow in their relationship and seeing them as parents.  I thought this was a great look into their lives! Great continuation into this series!

  EXCERPT:
I’ve just popped a cube of Wisconsin Cheddar into my mouth when my phone chimes, signaling a call from Damien. “Hey,” I say through a mouthful of cheese. “Are you in the car?”
“Actually, I’m stuck here. It’s been one of those days.”
“Oh.” Disappointment crashes over me, along with the fear that my plans for a long weekend are going to be swept away in a flood of work crises. I draw in a breath and catch Jamie’s eye, her expression sympathetic. “Well, Jamie’s here. She can watch the kids, and I could come stay the night at the Tower Apartment.” Stark International is based in Stark Tower, one of LA’s downtown high rises. Damien’s private office takes up half the top floor, and his—now our—private apartment takes up the other half of the space.
 “That’s tempting, but no. I need…”
As he trails off, that knot of worry in my stomach starts to tighten. “What?” I whisper, hoping that now, finally, he’ll tell me what’s the matter.
“I need to deal with this.”
 “Damien, please—”
“I’ll be home as soon as I can. I promise. I love you. Kiss the girls for me. And I’ll see you later tonight.”
I hesitate, waiting to hear those familiar words: Until then, imagine me, touching you. But there’s only silence, and I swallow rising tears. “I love you, too. Do you want to talk to La—” I begin, but he’s already clicked off.
I draw a breath and stare at my phone before lifting my head and meeting Jamie’s eyes.
“I’m sorry,” she says. “But honestly, Nicholas, the man pretty much runs the entire known universe. Of course there’s stuff on his mind.”
She’s right, and I draw in a breath, suck it up, and force myself into a good mood as we change into swimsuits, then take the kids onto the back patio.

My Review

This was the first book of this new series and it was an edge-of-your-seat, action-packed, delicious read!  Guilty pleasure, right here!  This is a crossover to end all crossovers. I feel like EVERYONE made an appearance in this book.  We've seen the Lost Boys in previous Masters and Mercenaries books and now we're getting into their stories.  This book had laughs, mystery, romance and of course, Lexi style action!  The beginning of this book was a little hard for me to get into (lots of characters happening at once and a little slow), but once I did, this book sank it's claws into me and didn't let go! Jax and River weren't in a place that they were looking for someone, but they were drawn to each other. Their chemistry was palpable and they made a unique pair.  River's previous relationship kicked her in the teeth.  Jax uses his skill to help her out a little.  He's sweet and protective of her.  I enjoyed their budding relationship. This book was a good start to this series and I can't wait for the next one!

Strong-willed Anne was fearless and loved the thrill of fighting fires, pushing herself to be the best. But when one risky decision at a warehouse blaze changes her life forever, Anne must reinvent not only her job, but her whole self.

Shattered and demoralized, Anne finds her new career as an arson investigator a pale substitute for the adrenaline-fueled life she left behind. She doesn't believe she will ever feel that same all-consuming passion for her job again—until she encounters a string of suspicious fires setting her beloved city ablaze.

Danny McGuire is a premiere fireman, best in the commonwealth, but in the midst of a personal meltdown. Danny is taking risks like never before and seems to have a death wish until he teams up with Anne to find the fire starter. But Danny may be more than a distraction, and as Anne narrows in on her target, the arsonist begins to target her.

Harbor Street and Eighteenth Avenue
Old Downtown, New Brunswick, Massachusetts

Box alarm. One-niner-four-seven. Two engines and a ladder from the 499, responding.
Or, put another way, Anne Ashburn’s Friday night date had showed up on time and was taking her to a show. Granted, “on time” was the precise moment she had sat down for a meal at the stationhouse with her crew, and the “show” was a warehouse fire they were going to have to chorus-line for. But if you judged the health of a relationship on its constancy and whether it brought purpose and meaning to your life?
Then this firefighting gig was the best damn partner a woman could ask for.
As Engine Co. 17 turned the corner onto Harbor with siren and lights going, Anne glanced around the shallow seating area of the apparatus. There were four jump seats behind the cab, two forward- facing, two rear-, the pairs separated by an aisle of gear. Emilio “Amy” Chavez and Patrick “Duff” Duffy were on one side. She and Daniel “Dannyboy” Maguire were on the other. Up in front, Deshaun “Doc” Lewis, the engineer, was behind the wheel, and Captain Christopher “Chip” Baker, the incident commander, was shotgun.
Her nickname was “Sister.” Which was what happened when you were the sibling of the great Fire Chief Thomas Ashburn Jr., and the daughter of the revered—falsely as it turned out— Thomas Ashburn, Sr.
Not everybody called her that, though.
She focused on Danny. He was staring out the open window, the cold November wind blowing his black hair back, his exhausted blue eyes focused on nothing. In their bulky turnouts, their knees brushed every time the engine bumped over sewer access panels, potholes, manholes, intersections.
Okay, okay, she wanted to say to fate. I know he’s there. You don’t have to keep reminding me.
The hardheaded bastard was a lot of things, most of which carried terms you couldn’t use around your grandmother, but he knew she hated the “Sister” thing, so to him, she was Ashburn.
He’d also called her Anne—once. Late at night about three weeks ago.
Yes, they had been naked at the time. Oh, God . . . had they finally done that?
“I’m gonna beat you at pong,” he said without looking at her. “Soon as we get back.”
“No chance.” She hated that he knew she’d been staring at him. “All talk, Dannyboy.”
“Fine.” He turned to face her. “I’ll let you win, how about that?”
His smile was slow, knowing, evil. And her temper answered the phone on the first ring.
“The hell you will.” Anne leaned forward. “I won’t play with you if you cheat.”
“Even if it benefits you?”
“That’s not winning.”
“Huh. Well, you’ll have to explain to me the ins and outs of it when we’re back at the house. While I’m beating you.”
Anne shook her head and glared out the open window.
The first tap on her leg she ascribed to a bump in the road.
The second, third, and fourth were obviously—
She looked back at Danny. “Stop it.”
“What?”
“Are you twelve?” As he started to smile, she knew exactly where his mind had gone. “Not inches. Age.”
“I’m pretty sure I peak more like at sixteen.” He lowered his voice. “What do you think?”
Between the sirens and the open windows, no one else could hear them—and Danny never pulled the double entendre if there was a risk of that. But yes, Anne now knew intimately all of his heavily muscled and tattooed anatomy. Granted, it had been only that once.
Then again, unforgettable only had to happen one time.
“I think you’re out of your mind,” she muttered.
And then they were at the scene. The old 1900s-era warehouse was a shell of its former useful self, sixty-five thousand square feet of broken glass panes, rotting beams, and blown-off roof panels. The outer walls were brick, but based on the age, the floors and any room dividers inside were going to be wood. The blaze was in the northeast corner on the second floor, billowing smoke wafting up into the forty-degree night air before being carried away by a southerly wind.
As Anne’s boots hit the ground, she pulled the top half of her turnouts closed. Her ponytail was up high on the back of her head, and she stripped out the band, reorganized the shoulder length, and cranked things tight at her nape. The brown was still streaked with blond from the summer, but she needed to get it trimmed—so all that lightness was on the chopping block.
Of course, if she were a woman “who took care of herself,” she’d get it highlighted through the winter months. Or so her mother liked to tell her. But who the hell had time for that?
“Sister, you sweep the place with Amy for addicts,” Captain Baker commanded. “Stay away from that corner. Danny and Duff, run those lines!”
As Captain Baker continued to bark orders out, she turned away. She had her assignment. Until she completed it, or there was an insurmountable obstacle or change of order, she was required to execute that directive and no other.
“Be safe in there, Ashburn.”
The words were soft and low, meant for her ears alone. And as she glanced over her shoulder, Danny’s Irish eyes were not smiling.
A ripple of premonition made her rub the back of her neck. “Yeah, you, too, Maguire.”
“Piece’a cake. We’ll be back at pong before ten.” They walked away from each other at the same time, Danny going around to the stacks of hoses in the back, her linking up with Chavez…

Meghan Quinn - The Left Side of Perfect excerpt

Her hands rest on her hips, the navy-blue Grecian-style dress draped down the length of her body, a small slit on the side that barely reaches her knee. “You’re really fixated on this, aren’t you?”
“Nah, didn’t care too much. A homemade dinner would have been nice, though.”
 “I can’t cook.”
“Neither can I,” I answer honestly. I either eat out, or I make myself scrambled eggs, and that’s about it. Rory taught me how to make meatballs once but hell if I can remember how to do that. All I know is that I enjoyed crushing the beef between my fingers. I get by with limited knowledge in the kitchen.
She chuckles. “Well, aren’t we a pair?” She turns to watch Stryder and Rory together. Apparently not giving a shit about the even bigger elephant in the room, Ryan asks, “Is this weird for you?”
“I have a flask in my jacket pocket, so you tell me.”
She lifts her bouquet and pulls out a mini bottle of alcohol. She wiggles her eyebrows at me. “Thought maybe we’d both need this since we have to sit through having all these pictures taken with them.”
“Smirnoff? That’s what you brought with you?”
“It was all I had. Don’t judge me.”
 “I’m judging.”
Playfully she whacks my arm. “You shouldn’t be judging me. It was innovative. I carved out a little space in my bouquet for this bottle. If anything, you should congratulate me on this genius idea.” “Was it your idea?”
“I mean”—she toes the ground—“I might have seen the idea on Pinterest along with a recipe for beer cookies that tasted like vomit.”
“Beer cookies?” I shake my head and take the little bottle from her. Twist the cap, tilt the bottle back, and swig. I hand it back to her, leaving half the bottle. “Even I know better than to think beer cookies would taste good.”
“They were for a boyfriend I was trying to impress.”
 “Impress or poison?”
“Impress.” She laughs. “Although after our breakup, I should probably say poison. Teach all future suitors: if you mess with me, you get poisoned.”
“It’d keep me away, that’s for damn sure.”
She finishes the rest of the little bottle and returns it to her bouquet. She pats it and says, “I can recycle it later.”
“Get drunk and save the earth. Sounds like a good combination to me.”
“Ryan and Colby, can we get you over here for a few pictures?” the photographer calls out.
“That’s our cue.” Ryan pokes my cheek with her index finger, looking sincerely at me. “Don’t forget to smile, because these pictures will last forever.”
“Scowling not in the job description of best man?”
As we walk over, she says, “I would normally say no, but given the bride is your ex-girlfriend, one scowl is allowed.”
“One scowl? Damn, better make it a good one.”

What would I get?"
She didn't miss the suggestion in his eyes or the playful curve of his smile.
Then this whole farce is doomed for failure."
He was teasing her.
